Martin has always been involved with music even from a young age when he was learning to play the organ and music theory under the tuition of the late Mr Micheal Waller as well as a brief spell learning the French Horn at school in Horsham, Sussex. He carried on playing the keyboard through his school years and even whilst serving in the Army (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) for 14.5 years.
Later in life having left the Army Martin settled in North Wales where he was re-introduced to the world of brass instruments by Rhyl Silver Band and learned to play the cornet with them eventually progressing onto 2nd cornet in the band.
Martin then moved bands and joined Beaulah Brass Band based in Abergele, North Wales, and again played 2nd cornet for a number of years before progressing onto Soprano cornet for a while before deciding that he felt more comfortable playing something with a more mellow tone! So he moved onto Baritone, initially in the 2nd Baritone chair and then progressing onto 1st Baritone where he sat for some time. More recently Martin met his lovely partner Diane who showed an interest in learning to play the trombone, so in order to teach her Martin set about teaching himself to play the trombone and within a few short months decided that this was the instrument for him and is currently playing 2nd trombone in Beaulah Brass Band. Martin is also very involved with the Beaulah Brass training band, he conducts the band as required, plays Euphonium with them, and also gives 1 on 1 lessons to beginner brass students.
Over the past few years he has been a close friend of Belle Vue Brass Band and has played with them on the Whit Marches, Concerts, and the Hardraw Scar Band Contest. In October 2017 Martin was appointed as the Belle Vue Brass Bands Musical Director and has ambitions of seeing the band progress steadily in the coming months and years.
